"Jeffery's journey begins in the womb, conceived by a young couple who were unprepared and uninterested in parenthood. Despite considering abortion, they chose to continue the pregnancy. As Jeffery's aunt, I supported my sister emotionally during a challenging pregnancy marked by poor choices and health struggles.

Jeffery's birth brought a brief NICU stay, but he emerged as a healthy, beautiful baby. Due to his parents' challenges, he ended up living in less-than-ideal conditions without proper nursery or equipment. The father's intermittent presence caused further disruptions.

On September 5th, I received a distressing photo of Jeffery on life support. His mother revealed he had experienced severe complications while with his father, leading to brain bleeds and detached muscles. The subsequent medical journey uncovered non-accidental head trauma, resembling Shaken Baby Syndrome.

I rushed to Jeffery's side, navigating a heartbreaking scene of a fragile baby hooked up to machines. His parents, seemingly indifferent, stayed briefly during visits, leaving Jeffery in the care of nurses. The neurologist's revelations about the severity of Jeffery's injuries shocked me.

Determined to support Jeffery, I rearranged my life, quitting my job and taking on the responsibility of fostering him. His parents' erratic behavior during visits and their threats prompted supervised meetings through Pathways.
The arrival of COVID-19 halted visits, allowing Jeffery to make progress in therapy. Meanwhile, my husband, battling health issues, experienced setbacks. Despite challenges, Jeffery's resilience shone through, and we celebrated small victories.

Jeffery's parents sporadically participated in virtual and in-person visits, demonstrating little interest. Their actions led to the termination of some visits, emphasizing their lack of commitment.
As Jeffery's health improved, my husband's condition worsened, necessitating a kidney transplant. The turmoil continued, but Jeffery's strength and progress were beacons of hope.
