James McCallum, at 19 months old, acquired this moniker because of a rare skin condition that left doctors puzzled.
Before his birth on August 19, 2021, ultrasounds failed to provide any insights into James' condition, leaving his mother, Kaitlyn McCallum, 35, and her husband Tim, 41, concerned when they observed scabbing and lumps on James' back.
Initially appearing like a birthmark, the abnormality eventually grew, covering 75% of his back and becoming bulkier and lumpier. James couldn't sleep on his back due to the discomfort caused by this growth, which his parents likened to a turtle shell.
Doctors were initially uncertain about the nature of the condition, prompting James' parents to undergo months of testing, with the results revealing little. Concerned about potential growth, James had his first surgery in February 2022, involving an MRI to assess internal development.
The surgery was successful, alleviating concerns about internal growth. The McCallums, relieved by the negative test results, began the process of removal and joined a supportive Facebook group for insights into managing the condition's symptoms.
Worried about potential regrowth, Tim and Kaitlyn decided on tissue expansion, commencing the procedure in September 2022. This involved growing healthy skin surgically at home by injecting saline into expanders placed under the skin by a doctor.
This decision has significantly improved James' quality of life, making him happier and more comfortable. The family is optimistic about completely resolving the issue by summer, and they're willing to embrace minimal scarring as a positive outcome.
